Learning objective

Trace a finished serial to raw lots and identify all affected finished goods and shipments from a raw lot within the target time.

Roles

Warehouse, production, quality, sales, service and IT

Prerequisites

  • Defined lot/serial policy and label standard.
  • Reliable capture devices and accountable roles at transaction points.

Completion checks

  • Backward and forward results balance without orphan records.
  • The drill identifies affected stock, WIP, shipments and customer scope.

Common errors

  • Labelling only finished goods without linking raw lots and operations.
  • Losing relationships after rework or split.

Thailand project note

For Thailand, confirm Thai/English business and item masters, THB and foreign currencies, Asia/Bangkok time, segregation of duties, electronic records and local document retention. VAT, WHT, customs, BOI, statutory accounting, product compliance and occupational-safety settings require current review by qualified Thai professionals; this tutorial is not legal or tax advice.

Steps

01Define lot- or serial-controlled items, numbering rules, creation point and mandatory capture events.
02At receipt, record supplier lot, internal lot, quantity, inspection status and purchase source.
03At issue and reporting, capture raw lot, work order, operation, equipment, operator and finished lot or serial.
04Inspection, rework, split, merge, scrap and substitution must preserve or explicitly transform trace links.
05At shipment, link finished lot or serial to customer, order, date and quantity; retain the identifier in service records.
06Run backward trace from one finished item to raw material, supplier and inspection; then forward trace one raw lot to affected goods and customers.
07Record elapsed time, breaks, missing data and recall list; remediate and repeat.
